What I'm finding quasi-ironic about the whole situation is that it's going to be JC who gives Nsync the coup de grace. Justin's unlikely to wait out a JC promo and tour, instead he'll start his second album. Not that there will necessarily be that much promo, since Jive is pretty clearly dumping the album, but even Nick got a tour. It's not really a surprise, I guess, but it's sort of bitter to have JC be the one wielding the knife.

At this point, I wish pretty desperately that JC had just said no back when Jive and Dallas were pushing him to do an album. Not that I didn't think that at least one person involved in Onlyartist was a creep, but they could have dumped him, the idea itself wasn't bad. And we would have JC music long ago, without all the other crap.

ETA: I really wonder, what the hell went wrong at/after the showcase to turn Jive so sour on the album. The only story I can make make sense in my head is that the BMG people saw him at the showcase, got interested in the album and demanded to hear it, and then when they did, decided it just wouldn't do. Or I guess the same thing could have happened with the Jive senior management, but Jive doesn't release that many albums, you would have thought they'd have already heard it a week before the single was supposed to come out.

You're a bigger pessimist than me, shocking.

I think you might be blaming the wrong person for the demise of onlyartist.com. The plan would NEVER have worked, it's as simple as that. No record label would ever allow their artists' to give away music for FREE. Jive coddled the situation b/c they know how to run a business (let your artist think you're supporting them) but it was obvious to me that onlyartist.com wouldn't go as planned. JC and Fred had a good idea but seriously, could you see Lenny Kravitz or any artist including JC (who is contracted as PART of NSYNC with Jive) being allowed out of his contract to put some music up on a site? No obvious monetary gain for the label? Oh puleese. Even an unsigned band would probably be made to take it down once they got signed.

Second, JC fucked up big time with his management. People with sense don't hire individuals with no track record to manage them and I'm not even getting into that discussion b/c it pisses me off to no end.

Third, JC is an artist and as such he'll bitch if he doesn't like what's going on. I'm certainly not putting all this on Jive. JC had his ass in NYC a few days ago (don't know if he's still around) dealing with Jive, obviously the push back on the album is the culmination of that conversation.

I also wish that JC had just gone with his gut instinct, then maybe NSYNC would have gotten together as originally planned, at the end of the year. Instead, it's a waiting and hoping game. Hoping that whatever happened between JC and BMG/Jive doesn't fuck with NSYNC.

Actually, I don't believe Jive could have kept him from releasing his own mp3s. They can keep him from signing with another record label, they can maybe keep him from releasing anything under the name they signed him under, but they can't keep him from releasing his own music. Exemplar, Prince, who while waiting out the expiration of his 'slave' contract released albums through his website.

I share your cynicism about amateur managers, but I can't say I actually have seen it demonstrated that Carlos is in over his head, just presumed it from the way the album release has been butchered.

And I don't see how this can't fuck up any Nsync album. Even if the album doesn't get pushed back any farther, and JC gets the bare minimum of promotion and touring, you are talking about him being tied up until late spring. I just cannot see Justin sitting around waiting.

Yeah, except JC isn't the only one's whos release dates are getting fucked around. Britney's first single was originally scheduled for August 21st. Now it's listed everywhere as TBA. It's not a JC thing, it's a Jive as a whole company kind of thing.

I thought NSYNC was supposed to be in the studio this fall? So they can record while JC's album is getting finished for an early 2004 release, then he can do a short tour, then the NSYNC album will be released early summer...

In my crazy little head, it all works out. But we will have to wait and see. Bah.

It's easy to be bitter and disillusioned at this point - we fans have been jerked around a lot over the past few months. Unfortunately, we're never going to have all the pieces of the puzzle, so trying to assign blame is a moot point... I'm just going to sit over here and keep on keeping the faith.
