I was talking with a friend online, and she mentioned a really cute nsync interview that she found streaming on a site, Lance saying JC would be a butterfly if he was an animal. But the site and the streaming video are gone now. And I think that's sad.

I'm pretty clever with my streaming video capture tools and converters, having just recently went to rescue a couple of my favorite .rm files off of AOL Music. And I managed to dig out and record a streaming Windows media file from Popworld for this friend. And y'know, one should give back to the community according to one's talents...

So the offer: have a favorite Nsync streaming video you'd hate to see disappear forever? Give me the url (or as close as you can), and I'll record it for you, and optionally convert it to avi or mpeg. I know I can do this for streaming Real and Windows files, and it should be possible for Quicktime as well though I haven't yet done it.

If I have time, I'm also willing to convert Real/Windows Media files to mpeg for people that can't view them, or simply hate proprietary formats with the fire of a thousand suns.

Feel free to pass this link on to other people who might like to employ this service.

Edited to say that does apply to more than one file! If you have several favorites, send 'em all.

Done! I think I'm going to have to get myself some cheap hosting site to host some of these videos, if anyone has a suggestion.

Does this mean you got the butterfly interview? Because that was at Popworld, wasn't it? Or am I hallucinating again? I hate it when that happens.

No, that was at worldpop. I checked it out; there's still a decayed version of the pop site hidden behind the new ringtone site, so you can still get the .ram files, but the actual .rm files they point were on another server, mediaupload.worldpop.com, that is no longer up. Sniff. I'm guessing from the fact that they are running on the same machine and didn't bother to delete the old site that it's being run by the same people, so if someone wanted to call 'em up and ask what happened to the old site, they could. It might be potentially possible to wangle the old files. But that's more social engineering than I'm willing to try to do at international phone rates :)

Popworld, Worldpop. I mix 'em up. Phoo!!! Well, let's see, there must be someone in the U.K. who could call and check?

The short answer is Streambox VCR for RealMedia, HiNet Recorder for Windows Media, and Net Vampire for Quicktime (only http streaming QT can be retrieved with NV, not rtsp streaming, I don't have a methodology for the latter yet.)

It can be trickier than just using these, especially when the true file location is deeply obscured, so I really should write the Slasher's Guide to Capturing Streaming Video. Another day!

If you figure out how to snag Quicktime, would you pass on the info? I also have some non-sync stuff I'd love to download.

Thanks,

If it's http streaming, it's really easy, at least if you can recover the true file location. You just put the file location url in something like NetVampire and voom, you've got it. Finding the true file location is the trick, see answer above about how I really need to write the Slasher's Guide.

Are you still willing to capture videos? How about the three videos featured here?

I'd forgotten about that and, quite frankly, didn't expect them to still be up when I opened the page. If you can capture them, that would be fantastic.

Thank you!
