Snippet from an LJer's conversation with JoJo:

"So then the Jive stuff came up. He told me a lot of things, but I'm just
gonna make a long story short. He basically said when JC took the song to
Jive they didn't want it. They wanted to turn it into a rap type song and
bring in Macy Gray. JC said no and he left. Dallas comes in, picks up on
JC's vibe, the fans hear it, radio plays it, boom Jive wants it. JC is now
signed under Jive.

Oh Jeebus. Fuck Jive hard, indeed! Those weasels, and three cheers for JC for sticking to his guns.

See, I don't think Jive are being weasels for saying no to a solo album, *as long as they weren't keeping him from going to another record company.* Jive is a business, and if they don't think a JC album would make money for them, they logically should say no. I think they are wrong, and apparently they've come to think that too, but there's nothing evil about it. In fact, it would be better for JC to go to another company that was actually interested in his music, then for Jive to put out some sort of half-heartedly promoted album out of some sense of obligation.

So I'm waiting to find out if Jive was interfering in him signing with someone else before I call them names.

Well, you make a good point. Still, I guess I'd say Jive should have given JC the benefit of the doubt. Which is easy to say once we hear the song and everybody (everybody who counts, anyway <g>)loves it, I realize.

In any case, what's important is that JC succeed the way he wants to; I'm certain we agree on that.

I'm also really amused at how our icons so nearly align!

Well they're still under contract with Jive, right? So perhaps it was either go independent and market himself, or go with Jive. I don't know how that works, I'm just speculating. Might be totally wrong.

I'm betting they made him a *really* good deal, though, if they had to eat some crow to do it. Whatever offer he brought to the table the first time -- the one that they turned down -- would obviously have to be sweetened to get him back, don't you think? I like to think he made 'em work for it. And part of me wants to still be mad at them, but the other part of me is giddy at the fact that he *is* signed to a major label now as a solo artist and GOD I hope they promote him half as much as they did Justin's PR push -- though I'm terrified at the thought of JC going on talk shows alone. *g* I'll be a basket case!

Anyway, sorry for the ramble. It's probably just as well that he can salvage a working relationship with Jive (if, in fact, this is all true and they did sign him). Because with more NSYNC material to put out in the future, it's in everyone's best interest to at least pretend to respect each other. At least that's how it works at *my* office. ;)

That's my concern, that Jive may have been both denying him a solo album, and keeping him from going to other record companies. It would explain his unhappiness. A group contract would not inherently bind the individual members from independent work, but Nsync weren't really in the strongest negotiating position when they signed the contract with Jive, and it's very possible that they had to agree to a clause giving Jive first crack at any solo work.

Now, I don't think that Jive could not both utterly refuse a solo album *and* keep him from going elsewhere. I'm pretty sure that any such clause wouldn't stand up in court, as contract law in the US very strongly supports the right to work. What I'm guessing may have happened is that Jive said they'd do a solo album -- but not with the artistic freedom that Justin had the clout to demand from Jive. That is, Jive picks producers, they pick what tracks make the album, they pick singles. And JC said no, because he'd already had enough of that with Nsync. But Jive then refused to cut him loose to seek a deal elsewhere.

This would explain a lot of things; JC's resort to onlyartist.com (if he couldn't have artist freedom in a solo album, he could make his own artist freedom on the net), stress between JC and Justin (Justin couldn't and shouldn't be blamed for what Jive did, but being constantly reminded that you are a second class citizen in Jive's eyes couldn't have made things comfortable between them), JC's unhappiness at the VMAs (ditto), JC not having heard any of Justin's songs during the early Justin interviews when Chris and even Joey (I bet Justin would have felt it would be like taunting JC to play the tracks in progress). It fits with the conversation with AJ, and Jive's recent change of heart would explain why things appear much better between JC and Justin now.

First things first -- that story makes me SO happy. Baby held out for what he deserved. They should have backed him the way they were backing Justin to begin with. I couldn't be happier. I *really* hope that's all correct.

Second -- is there anyone in the world that hasn't iconed this picture? WHEE! Now see? If he would do the intense "sex-it-up-for-the-camera" thing more often we wouldn't have to all freak out over the same picture. This just goes to show that our JC sex picture needs are not being met.

Let's blame Jive and hope they rectify this.

A big Yes! to everything you said, and I just had to squee at your icon and say I think I was the first person (first person I know of, anyway) to put the thug appeal puzzle together (yesterday afternoon). <preens>

What really makes me laugh is that I bet JC would just look blank if presented with the concept...

If this is true, JIVE SUCKS MONKEY'S ASS! JC should have just told them to fuck off! Grrr!

Jive sucks. They didn't think it was mainstream like Justin's work so they blew him off. That sucks more than words. I hope JC does his solo album and blows everyone out of the watrer.

Your JJB drama made me giggle. And remind me why I stay away. That place gets scary. So...glad you added this here.

I don't know Jive's reasons for turning down the song in the first place but I'm glad they came to their senses.

She got the part about them wanting it to go rap right, though, so I'm suspecting miscommunication rather than lying.
